I’m an Old Age Psychiatrist, specialising in the management of challenging behaviour in dementia. No one needs me to explain how horrible this illness can be for some people, and yet we are barely any further forward in its treatment than we were when I became a consultant in 2000. Decades working with people with dementia have left me wondering if it wouldn’t be better to prevent people getting it in the first place. This led me into the arms of the BSLM, where I heard Professor Peter Elwood talk about the Caerphilly study at the Cardiff conference in 2019; up to 60% of cases could be preventable. It has been my mission ever since to get this message out and I took the IBLM Diploma in 2021 to boost my credibility as a messenger. Dr. Dimple Devedas was the Study Group Leader who guided me through the process, and it was her example that inspired me to offer to take up the role this year.
